One of the most beautiful itineraries that can be traveled on foot in Italy; here in a nutshell what awaits you in this stretch of the Francigena from Siena to Viterbo.

The magnificent landscapes of the dirt roads (strade Bianche) and the Val d’Orcia to discover breathtaking villages such as Vignoni and Bagno Vignoni, San Quirico and Radicofani as far as Viterbo.
You are in the land of many world famous delicacies like the red wine Brunello di Montalcino and the Pienza pecorino cheese.  You will have a wonderful and unforgettable self guided walking journey in the very heart of Italy.

Day 1: SIENA

Arrival in SIENA, accommodation in your Hotel in the very center of the town and spare time for visiting the historical center: Piazza del Campo, Santa Caterina and the amazing Cathedral.

 

Day 2: From SIENA to MONTERONI D'ARBIA

 If you walk this stretch on a beautiful sunny day, this stage can become unforgettable thanks to the boundless panoramas that can be enjoyed from the ridges of the Val d'Arbia. Behind us we can admire the profile of Siena, lying on the hills on the horizon. The Grancia di Cuna, near More di Cuna, an ancient fortified granary, is the main historical attraction of this stretch.

Day 3: From MONTERONI D'ARBIA to BUONCONVENTO

Easy nice stretch as far as Buonconvento, whose historical center really worth a visit. The itinerary is almost all flat and runs mainly on unpaved local roads touching ancient and suggestive places. At arrival accommodation in Hotel in the very center of the town.

Day 4: From BUONCONVENTO to SAN QUIRICO D'ORCIA

Fantastic stretch in the Tuscan countryside offering wonderful idyllic views of the countryside including Montalcino and of its world famous vineyards. Arrival in San Quirico d’Orcia that welcomes us with its amazing collegiate church. Time for visiting this nice tuscan town famous also for the good food and fine wines. Don’t miss the visit to Horti Leonini, a garden of the renaissance  age.

Day 5: From SAN QUIRICO D'ORCIA to GALLINA

We walk today in the enchantment of the panoramas of the Val d'Orcia, and the first pearl of the day is Vignoni Alto, a village out of time that heralds Bagno Vignoni, with its extraordinary thermal pool in the square. Arrival in a typical  Tuscan agriturismo in the beautiful countryside (this leg can be added to the following one as far as Radicofani – total 36 km).

Day 6: From GALLINA to RADICOFANI

Radicofani is at the slopes of Monte Amiata, a charming little town with a very special feeling of ancient times. The climb to Radicofani is very hard, but it is rewarded by the beautiful panorama that can be enjoyed along the way and an evening dinner in one of the tiny restaurants of the village is an unforgettable experience.

Day 7: From RADICOFANI to ACQUAPENDENTE

Leaving Tuscany you are walking now in Lazio, the old papal state but the landscape is beautiful as always! Arriving in Acquapendente you can’t miss the Basilica of Santo Sepolcro for discovering the cripta with the 24 columns that dates back to the X century. Accommodation in a centrally located hotel. (it is possible to split this long leg with an overnight halfway).

Day 8: From ACQUAPENDENTE to BOLSENA

This stage continues without emotion from Acquapendente  to San Lorenzo Nuovo, where we can admire a beautiful panorama of Lake Bolsena. Descended into the volcanic crater, we take a pleasant path on dirt roads that leads us to Bolsena, in a continuous ups and downs among olive groves, meadows and woods, with the beautiful views of the lake in the background. Bolsena is a nice little town on the Lake shores popular as a holiday destination.

Day 9: From BOLSENA to MONTEFIASCONE

Among olive groves and bushes the path departs from Bolsena and, with continuous ups and downs and splendid views of the lake, the 360 ° view that can be enjoyed on arrival in Montefiascone from the Torre del Pellegrini is thrilling. This small town is very famous for the production of a white wine called Est Est Est.

Day 10: From MONTEFIASCONE to VITERBO

The first part of the stage is spectacular as you walk on the ancient paved road of via Cassia, still in excellent condition. We then cross a hilly stretch, with beautiful views of Montefiascone and Viterbo. Finally you have reached your destination, one of the most beautiful cities of Italy with a marvelous historical center.

Day 11: VITERBO
